Viewing 3-D Crystal Distributions
and Chemical Zoning

Any sequence of photographs can be presented as a movie showing how properties vary with time or with direction of viewing. These movies are easy to create. The editors of GMR can assist wtih the technical details. The author provides the imagination and the static images.

Spear and Daniel (1998; GMR v1n1) imaged the garnet interior using serial sectioning and scanning of the section on a flat bed scanner. The results were presented as quicktime movies with preprogrammed views of the crystal distribution. You can control the movie with the slide bar at the bottom once it loads.

Hirsch et al. (2000; GMR v2n3) generated theoretical distributions of garnet crystals and presented the results as 3-D metafiles using Apple's Quickdraw3D technology. The files are viewable in a browser with a plug-in or off-line as explained on this instructions page. Once you download and install the plugin try viewing Figure 9 as a 3-D image.

or any of the other figures as illustrated in the paper (GMR v2n3).
