MSA Grant for Research in Crystallography

    The Mineralogical Society of America's Grant for Research in Crystallography is funded by the Edward H. Kraus Crystallographic Research Fund with contributions from MSA members and friends. The grant awards up to $5,000 for research in the field of mineralogical crystallography. In particular, this grant targets projects within the areas of mineralogy, crystal chemistry, petrology, mineral physics, biomineralization, and geochemistry for which research bearing on crystal structure is an explicit and integral element. Students, including graduate and undergraduate students, are encouraged to apply, in addition to young researchers. However, all proposals are considered together. The award selection will be based on the qualifications of the applicant, the quality, innovativeness, and scientific significance of the research, and the likelihood of success of the project.

    The eligibility requirements for the grant are that the applicant:

    • must have reached his or her 25th birthday but not yet have reached his or her 36th birthday in the year the grant proposal is submitted,
    • cannot submit proposals for both this and Mineralogy/Petrology grant in the same year, and
    • is not a MSA Councilor.

    The grant is for research-related expenses only. Travel to meetings, conferences, short courses, non-research fieldtrips, tuition, non-research living (room and board) expenses, overhead or indirect costs, etc. are not suitable uses of the money. Neither should the money be used for salary or wages for the researcher. Proposals that make such requests will not be considered further. The succesful applicant will also be asked in the year following grant to write a short summary of how the money was spent.

    The next award will be made in January, 2015. Proposal submissions for the grant are to be made online. Instructions for application and submission of proposals are at http://grants.minsocam.org.
