Author Self-Checklist for Final Draft

Please note that the editors will make changes to your final draft to conform to our style and to the rules of English as well as to improve clarity, conciseness, and understanding.

Electronic Details

If the revision you upload is not Word or rtf, you will be asked to supply this format.

Tables will also be needed in Word, rtf, excel, or other format.

Upon acceptance, the editorial office sends information about artwork, including ftp directions, as needed. However it is helpful, if uploading any revised artwork, to ensure (1) it has EMBEDDED FONTS and (2) it appears not jaggy when viewed at 400% on your monitor. More info about figures is all over both the web submission page and the MSA Instructions for Authors.

Use “symbol” font for Greek and special characters when possible (but not degree signs).

Do NOT use “Math type” or “equation editor” for simple superscripts, subscripts, or stacks. We generally know when to stack something or you can put a “Note to typesetting” at the top or bottom of your revision to clarify notation. There will be a cost for rekeying we need to do.

DO use “math type” or “equation editor” for display equations. Do not use “pictures”.

Deposit tables or materials should be in a separate file, uploaded with your revision. PDF or html are the safest formats, although you can use Word, rtf, plain text, excel, negotiate others.

Text Details

Put commas after e.g. and i.e. (e.g., this example).

Do not have a space between number and percent symbol, e.g., 5%, or 2, 9, and 10%

Leave a space between number and unit, e.g., 3 °C, 5.72 Å

Spell out the word “Figure” in text, but abbreviate in parentheses (Fig. 2).

Do not italicize “Latin” phrases such as et al.

Spaces before and after plus and minus symbols, etc. (e.g., 1 + 2)

Please nest parentheses inside brackets, inside braces, repeating as necessary. {[()]}

Use superscript or subscript NOT raised or lowered type.

Figure Details

Use a “Helvetica” type font such as abcdeg for labels and lettering. No parentheses or periods.

Please consider the size of type on your artwork — do not use type that is too small, or will be too small upon reduction to 1 column!

Turn labels sideways.

Do use standard terms, styles, and symbols e.g., T for temperature,  proper subscripts and superscripts, etc.

Check that each table and figure is mentioned in the text in numerical order.

References cited

Spell out journal names fully! Close up space in initials. When only two authors in citation, do NOT put comma before “and” (e.g., Smith, J. and Brown, Z.) There is no italic or bold in references unless in other document title. Order is alphabetical for single or double authors, chronological for more than three authors.

Do read the web site, and look at recent issues, for more information!

For complete instructions to authors refer to the American Mineralogist web site at http://www.minsocam.org. At final revision, check that all references in the text are in the reference list and vice versa; check author names and years to ensure that they match. Omit from reference list any unpublished inormation, including papers in preparation or submitted but not yet accepted. These can be referred to in the text, with the person's name, “personal communication,” “in preparation,” “unpublished manuscript,” or “unpublished data.” The year is optional in these cases.
